Where can I find an independent financial advisor? On personal matters not business?

ASH asked:

I am looking for an independent financial advisor who can help me with my personal finances not any business ones. I have run up some debts on some credit cards and a loan and need some good independent advice on the best way to help manage this and pay off the debt as it is getting out of hand.

I have already been to the citizen’s advice bureau who to be honest were very nice but not very helpful. I don’t want to go to my bank as they will just try to sell me something I probably don’t want.

What I do want is to sit down with someone and go through all my personal finance and to then help me draw out a plan and give me some good advice as I’m not very good at these things. I do not mind paying a fee to the financial advisor to help me. I have tried looking up for an advisor on the internet but all that comes up is stuff about mortgages and business stuff

I live in Buckinghamshire so someone in and around that area or even London would be good to get in contact with.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

ASH

There are some excellent books at the library and the bookstores.
You can do all this yourself.
Try googling budgetting worksheet as a start
The books will tell you how to negotiate with cc companies for a lower interest rate, and in some cases settle for 1/2 the amounts.
Please try a good book first.

I don’t know about England, but in America there is a National Association of Professional Financial Advisors, so there is probably a version of that in your country - just search online for certified financial planners/advisors. They should be able to provide you with a listing for your area.
    Confirm two things:
    1) The advisor is certified by some sort of national organization.
    2) The advisor works on a fee-only basis, not on commission for selling certain financial products.

To be honest, you can do this for yourself if you’re willing to put in a little work. Go to your local library and check the “personal finance” section. There is lots of great advice on how to manage and eliminate debt. Authors like David Ramsey, David Bach, and Suze Orman all offer sensible, inspirational advice.

Three words that will be invaluable to you:

CONSUMER CREDIT COUNSELING. This is a non-profit agency, not a paid service, that is in your telephone directory. They are fantastic, and will do exactly what you ask for.
